Metropolitan Museum of Art announces Thomas P. Campbell will be its new director

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has named a new director.

Thomas P. Campbell, curator in the museum's Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts, will start his new job as the museum's ninth director and chief executive Jan. 1.

The 46-year-old native of Cambridge, England, has worked at the Met since 1995. He's organized exhibitions on tapestry in the Renaissance and Baroque periods.

In January, previous director Philippe de Montebello announced plans to retire by the end of 2008. The 72-year-old took over the museum in 1977.
