Storm strikes Grand Teton climbers

Grand Teton rangers conduct mountain rescue after several climbing parties caught in storm

Rangers were conducting a high-altitude rescue in Grand Teton National Park after several climbing parties got caught in a lightning storm.

Park spokeswoman Jackie Skaggs said Wednesday that rescuers were going after multiple people above 12,000 feet on 13,770-foot Grand Teton mountain. Three separate climbing parties reported injuries.

The storm struck around noon Wednesday. Skaggs says she doesn't know how many people may have been injured or the nature of their injuries.

In 2003, a climber died from a lightning strike on the Grand Teton.

Earlier Wednesday, rangers retrieved the body of a woman who had died on a nearby mountain. Skaggs didn't have any information on the death.
